Tips for your in home newborn photo session from a fellow mom

Since becoming a parent in the winter of 2021, I’ve become so passionate and sentimental about photographing newborns and growing families (obbbbbviously). I especially love the point of view of an in home newborn session. Documenting what life truly looks like in those first few weeks of adding a new member to your family is so so sweet. The heart behind everything I do is documenting moments that can be looked at with love for the next several years, decades, and generations to come. That being said, I’ve got lots of tips for those who are looking forward to their own in home newborn session. Let’s get into it!

  1. I always recommend having your photographer arrive when baby has a full tummy. 9/10, a baby who is freshly fed is extra happy and easy to photograph!

  2. If you recognize a routine in your baby, I also recommend lining up with a time of day that baby tends to be sleepy/mellow.

  3. Your HOME does not need to be spotless. Really all that needs to be tidied up is your nursery and one other main living space. Your photographer won’t judge if there’s piles of clothes in a random room. Cleanliness is always top of mind for new parents, and let me just tell you you do NOT need to have your house looking perfect!!! (The rooms I use most in clients’ homes are the nursery, living room, and bedroom for reference)

  4. Have at least two — if not THREE — outfits set aside for baby. You’ll start with the favorite, then move on from there. It’s good to have a third outfit mostly just in case of blow outs or spit up. Best case scenario, baby is in a great mood and there’s simply plenty of time and good vibes for a third outfit!

  5. Set aside 1-2 swaddles, a stuffed animal, something with their name on it, or any other sentimental knick-knacks you may want baby to have for a photo or two.

  6. For outfits for yourself, I recommend COMFORT over anything. For me, that means a cutesy loungewear set or a flowy, breathable dress. Don’t force yourself to wear a certain outfit just because it’s cute, especially if it’s uncomfortable or difficult to move around in.

  7. Trust your photographer to document your family, and lean into having fun with it. If there ARE shots you super have your heart set on, communicate that to your photographer! I personally love to receive a pinterest board or a couple photo examples from my clients to ensure I can do the best job possible.
