Family Session Outfit Inspiration- Milestone Collection

I'm a huuuuuge supporter of making sure you and your family get those annual updated photos (let's be honest, I wish people got them seasonally -- kiddos change so so much so fast!). Documenting these special milestone doesn't need to be a big, complex event -- even just a quick 15-30 minutes in your backyard is truly perfect!

When thinking about family portraits, something that makes a big difference is styling! My perfect system for putting together your own outfits for family photos is coordinating. If you’re not sure what to wear or how to dress the family, here’s a tip on where to start:

Pick one "pillar" outfit or pattern with a few colors to it, then pair appropriately with that in mind! This could be a floral pattern, plaid print, a specific dress with texture, etc.. The easiest way to pair is to incorporate solid color clothing that brings out certain tones or aspects of your β€œpillar” outfit/item -- try not to add any additional colors or patterns that aren't already in that preselected item. Keep in mind the location of your session, the comfortability of each piece, and the weather during this process-- this will help you enjoy the time SO much more and avoid any regrets!

I send my clients a style guide with a lot more pointers and details, but this one tip truly goes a loooooooong way!

Need to spark your creative eye? Take a look at some styles from my milestone sessions :)

THE RUTHERFORD FAMILY

Josie's dress was kind of the "pillar" of the outfits. Her dress was floral with tones of pinks, tans, and greens. From there, Nick's green shirt paired perfectly with the same greens of her dress, and then little Ryder's outfit went so well with the tan colors.

THE CUNNINGHAM FAMILY

Neutrals with a pop of color! I love incorporating movement to document a more candid style of photo which makes comfortable clothing SUPER important

THE JUNO FAM

An earthy and bright color pallet - blues, tan, white, and green. These two fit in their environment perfectly and the results were these beautiful intimate photos as a new family :’)

THE FERRERIAS

These two incorporatde neutral tones - black, white, grey, tan. Playing off the details in color from the pattern in each piece
