My Complete Guide to Candid Posing

So you’ve booked a session and your couple makes it clear that they HATE being in front of the camera because they feel awkward. Now what?! Trust me, we’ve ALL been there. I get it, posing can be a really intimidating part of a session, but it doesn’t have to be! In all my years of experience, I’ve learned that getting those perfect shots happen when people are just being themselves -- which is why I ditch the “stand here and do this” prompts for ones that are more authentic :) Photographer friends, if you’re looking for ways to help make your couples feel more comfortable and natural, this one’s for you!

Here’s my guide to candid posing -- my go-to posing prompts and top 3 tips!

Tip #1 - keep the photo session experience conversational. Get to know your couple them while you shoot -- you'll open up, they'll open up, and it'll get them acting like themselves quickly! Trust me, it’s crazy what magic can happen when you both feel at ease and are truly enjoying the experience.

Tip # 2 - use simple prompts like "look at each other" or "lightly touch noses" to evoke those natural snuggly candid moments. Prompts like these are built-in moments of connection between your couple, which gives you lots of opportunities to capture all the sweetness :)

Tip # 3 - focus on simple movements and *show them* what you mean! Movement can bring a lot to a session -- it’s often where the giggles really come out and couples start to feel more loose. Have your couple walk towards you, away from you, take wide steps, bump hips, etc... and showing them what you mean will again, help them feel so comfy!

I hope these tips give you the confidence to make your couples feel SO comfortable-- making their experience, and yours, a fun one! :)
