What to Include in Your Wedding Detail Photos

I’ve discovered one of the things I friggin’ LOVE about weddings is the unique, intimate, adventurous, and unapologetically your own kind of details that go into each couple’s day. There are SO many intentional personal touches that play a part in making your day, YOUR day… and my job is to capture all these different aspects for you to look back on.

One epic way to get these wedding day details is with flat lays. This is a MUST for any couple’s wedding I shoot because the details are always worth getting! Whether you’re getting married and not sure what to include, or you’re a photographer wanting to get some rad detailed shots for your next couple, here’s my list of what to include in your wedding detail photos:

  1. Stationary - One of the go-to’s for flat lays is the wedding invitation. Not only do these typically match the color palette and theme of the wedding day - they’re also a great keepsake because they list allllll the important details (location, time, names, etc.). Other things you could include are any personal menus, notes, or paper things that are especially memorable :)

  2. Rings, obviously - I like including the rings as a major aspect in flat lays because of the intentionality of their design. Each has a unique story just like the couples who wear them (why they picked that specific ring, how they proposed, the wedding band they chose) - rings are the ultimate detail and symbol of a love-filled day. A sweet touch that could be added to display these is a fun ring box!

  3. Flowers - An aspect of the day that every couple wishes they could keep forever - now you can!

  4. Handwritten letters/ Vows - One of my FAVORITE things between a couple on their day is exchanging letters/ handwritten vows. Just another touch that is SO personal and special!

  5. Jewelry, Shoes, Perfume, + anything else you wear - These are some of the details that add to the way you FEEL on your wedding day, which makes them extra special to get photos of! I’d recommend including any wearables in your flat lays

  6. Sentimental Items or Family Heirlooms - Basically, anything included in the day that gives you all the warm and fuzzy feels and the things that you think of and say, ‘this is so US’!!

My biggest tip for couples is to make a list. Once you’ve done so, I’d recommend putting all the items in a box/bag together and designating someone to be in charge of getting the items to the venue and photographer (typical while the bride is getting ready) on your wedding day. This will help make sure they’re not forgotten and that way your photographer can knock these photos out right away - leaving more time for photos of you and your love!

Again, I ADORE the wedding day details. They really add so much to the moments that become your day. Not to mention, the intentionality that goes into them gives me a look into the sweet relationship and personality of each couple I have the opportunity to work with - it makes me so so happy!

I hope this list is helpful for those of you that are thinking about what to include in the wedding detail photos! :)
